No battery--has a pressure-sensitive quartz element. I have at least one where the piezo unit no longer works. The torches are not overly-robust. Those torches would be a lot more useful if they didn't screw-up the gas flow out the nozzle. 1 I have a Bernzomatic propane torch, #UL2317. It stopped working in the middle of a job. I tried a new tank but have the same problem. It makes a hissing sound when I turn the knob and I can get a very small flame initially but when I turn it up the flame goes out (but still hisses).
